With the significant increase in cyber attacks, it's important organisations and makers have access to strong measures to protect information and systems.Great to see Intel, NVIDIA and cloud providers building more advanced encryption capabilities in hardware for this purpose.https://www.darkreading.com/dr-tech/how-chip-makers-are-implementing-confidential-computing
Social scientists from the University of Chicago have formulated an algorithm that claims 90% accuracy in forecasting crime - detecting patterns of time to predict future events.
This isn't the first algorithm to look at this problem, but previous models identified emerging 'hotspots' which was subject to bias. The new model claims to be able to ask questions like 'what happens to the crime rate if property crimes increase?'... which could be a better measure. research paper > https://www.researchgate.net/publication/361651657_Event-level_prediction_of_urban_crime_reveals_a_signature_of_enforcement_bias_in_US_citiesimage credit: researchers
"In June 2015, 5 people had to be taken to a hospital after a chlorine gas leak at an [US-based] Apple data center". Could this be prevented in future? Note. Chlorine is used by many to sterilize the water circulated through liquid cooling systems in DCs. Microsoft, Apple and other technology leaders are looking to the metaverse and AI to help improve safety conditions in Data Centres. Early in the test phase yet, but could these solutions and data points improve working conditions for team members?https://techcrunch.com/2022/06/18/microsoft-and-meta-join-google-in-using-ai-to-help-run-their-data-centers/Image credit: ITnews and Google
Google DeepMind continues to invest its AI research into areas that could restore cultures of centuries long gone. The latest update to its ancient Greek restoration toolkit, Ithaca (successor to Pythia) claims to help historians restore damaged texts within 30 years of their date ranges and more."While Ithaca alone achieves 62% accuracy when restoring damaged texts, as soon as historians use Ithaca their performance leaps from 25% to 72%"An example: https://ithaca.deepmind.com/?image credit: pixabay
